Check the County Record Office website, as most have an online catalogue. You may be able to search the Gaol records to establish when your man was convicted, and maybe even get a copy of the entry.

No, the 1881 census image shows him listed as a convict.

Hi Susan Sorry to throw a spanner in the works - just looking at your original thread, and it shows him as a Post Office Worker and the prison you are looking at is in quite a remote spot - is it possible that he was 'seconded' there to work, rather than being an inmate? regards Trudy

You could also try Googling 'Black Sheep', a very interesting site dedicated to the criminal fraternity. Derek

How lucky of him to spend time in a lovely hotel for a while!! You could try looking for the ''hotel'' records on a2a: http://www.a2a.org.uk/ May tell you where the records are kept? Or you could try contacting the county record office for the area and ask if they have the records?? Good Luck (hope he got the room with a sea veiw?) Sarah

Hello everyone. Now that I've established that my ancestor was staying in Her Majesty's hotel during the 1881 census, does anyone have any advice on how to find out why he was locked up? Any info on websites appreciated. Susan
