If you have a name and type of occupation and which town I can look in The Times newspaper..... They printed lists weekly. If I find anything it will only give you a date, but this might help for future research? MMM

hi thats very kind of you his name is Abraham Guttenberg born germany C1841, changed his name by deed poll to Abraham Rose when he came here as a Hat Maker, some time between 1840 and 1880 or maybe a bit later he became bankrupt he lived at 10 Kenmure Road Hackney in the 1891 census 57 Oakley Road Islington N1 in the 1881 census 238 Mile End Road in the 1871 census it would be great if you could find out anything it seems his sons robbed him blind and he ended up penniless some sons eh??? thanks a lot

Not totally sure on this, but think the London Gazette, some of which is online, might have published details of bankruptcies. Just Google London Gazette.

Sheila, I seem to remember this story from before??? (maybe you asked on my old The Times thread on the Records Office board?? Anyway - There is only one William Crowther declared bankrupt in the Times within 20 years of 1880. This one is in the wrong trade (woolen manufacturer) and the wrong place (London). The problem seems to be the paper mainly sent it's junior hacks to the courts in London to hear the cases - there is definitely a bias towards the capital and its surrounds!! MMM
