If you follow the Archive links on this site: http://www.gazettes-online.*co.uk/index.asp?webType=0 (remove *) you should find something. You can search by various terms. &/Or (if you have UK address) you could join the Virtual Library of Bedfordshire and get access to the Times archive 1785-1985 - also for free. Christine

Linda, I expect you can find the details of his MC award on the internet. They were 'gazetted' and published in papers. My guess is that he would not have still been in the army aged 58 in 1948. Did he win his MC in WW1 or WW2? Maybe he was there on holiday? If he did indeed serve in WW2 then you can get his army service records from the MOD. Ian

Hi Gloria. Have phoned the library and they asked what was on the death certificate and they are looking in the newspapers to see if there is any info there. Thanks a lot. Linda

The library at Clayton-le-Moors, Accrington has information on Clayton Hall and quite possibly Moreton Hall if they were doing the same thing. Worth a phone call. We used to live quite close, but sorry we don't now or I would have been in for you. Gloria

Hi Gloria and Derek. Thanks for the information. That would tie in with him being in the Army wouldn't it. I'm off to have a look. Thanks again. Linda

Linda Just Googled it and found a reference to it as a Polish Hostel. Proposed 31/12/47. Not much more info. Perhaps you could do a search with these details? Derek

Just another thought-Clayton Hall, which is just up the road was used for stationing the army during the war, perhaps this was taken over in the same way. Gloria

Hi Linda, I have found Moreton Hall Farm in the A-Z of Lancashire. It is on the A680 Whalley to Accrington Road. It will come under Blackburn or Accrington Councils and might be worth giving them a ring. Gloria

Just received the death certificate for 1948 for my husbands Grandfather. He was a Captain in the Royal Artillery and lived with his family in Brighton. He died at Moreton Hall in Whalley, Clitheroe. It just says 'dead body found' Cause of death 'brain haemorrhage'. He was 58. Can anyone tell me what Moreton Hall is, or could have been, just after the war? Just trying to find out what he was doing there. Thanks........................................................ Library have just phoned he won the Military Cross and there is an article about him in the paper. They are sending me copies. Thanks so much Gloria Linda Linda
