Looking through pages from 1837 i have found that Amelia Lee gets married in the 3rd 1/4 of 1911. the problem is it doesn't list the spouses surname? have lookied on ancestry but only list marriages upto 1910? how do i found out the husband without ordering the cert?

You can't!! And even if it was transcribed on Ancestry or FreeBMD, you still wouldn't know which of the two possible spouses was the right one (unless you already knew their first name, perhaps??) Sorry... Sarah

I tried Familysearch for you but the only marriage for an Amelia Lee registered is in 1902 in Suffolk to a Donald Durrant.

www.familyrelatives(.)com have a complete transcription of BMD's from 1866 to 1920. You can therefore search on there using the year/qtr/district/volume/page that you've found and this should then give you the four names on the page - two males and two females. You could then look up the two males on a post-1919 electoral roll to see which one is married to an Amelia (Before 1919 women didn't have the vote so weren't listed). Another option would be to search the parish registers, though this could take some time if you don't know the parish as a registration district may include a dozen or more parishes. Not all of the post-1900 parish records are available, and of course it may have been a civil wedding, in which case it wouldn't be in the parish records anyway. In my opinion it would be easier just to buy the cert... Richard

Surely the easiest way (without buying the cert) is to ensure you have the reference from 1837 and then cross-reference with the spouse's surname in the same period? That's what I've always done. Regards Patricia UPDATE: Sorry, I completely mis-understood. Well, it WAS early! P

Patricia - the spouse's surname isn't shown in the index prior to 1912. Richard
