You will be the first after myself to get the receipe Sarah. You missed nothing except saving a few teeth by not trying my last batch.. Where is my Grandma.... she used to make the most scrumpous(?) soda bread/fruit bread/treacle bread that ever came out of an oven, oohhh I can smell it now......MMMMmmm. Shame I never inherited her cooking skills!! Anna

Pity we can't have virtual GR - then we could all try the soda bread you make once you have sorted out a better-then-s**t recipe!! I like mine with a thick spreading of real Irish butter, thanks! (and maybe a Guinness??) Sarah

Once I have it i'll post it her for you. anna

Glad to hear you had a great time - Maybe the record offices can wait, but perhaps visiting some rellies you might not get another chance (that sounds morbid, but they could move to Timbuktu or anywhere!) Did you get a recipe for the soda bread??????? Sarah

HI ALL, MANY MANY THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE GIVEN TO ME BEFORE I LEFT FOR THE EMERALD ISLE. HAVING CHECKED OUT OPENING TIMES OF LIBRARIES ,TOWN HALLS, RECORDS OFFICES ETC, AND ARMED WITH A PURSE FULL OF CHANGE , PLUS NOTE BOOK AND PENCILS, I ARRIVED FULL OF HOPE AND EXPECTATIONS, BRIMMING WITH OPTIMISIM. BLOODY HELL, I FELL AT THE FIRST FENCE, IT WAS THE GALWAY RACES AND ALL THE FLIPPIN OFFICES WERE CLOSED FOR THE WEEK.!!! I DID GET TO A COUPLE OF PARISH CHURCHES, WHILE THE PRIESTS WERE HELPFUL, I AM NO FURTHER DOWN THE 'ROAD'. ALTHOUGH I DID MEET UP WITH THE COUSIN THAT I MET THROUGH GR. SHE IS A REALLY LOVELY, INTERESTING WOMAN, WHO TRAVELLED FOR MILES ON A BUS TO MEET MYSELF AND THE OTHER HALF. I COULD NOT BELIVE THAT SOMEONE WOULD DO THAT FOR ME.!! SO INSTEAD OF LOOKING UP RECORDS, I DECIDED TO GO VISIT ALL THE RELLIES THAT I KNOW OVER THERE. SO I HAD A GREAT TIME, STUFF MYSELF FULL OF THE FAB SODA BREAD, AND MET PEOPLE I HAVEN'T SEEN IN 30 YEARS. SO ALTHOUGH I DID NOT GET ANY FAMILY HISTORY DONE, I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE NOW ROOTING THROUGH OLD ALBUMS ETC IN THE HOPE THAT THEY CAN HELP ME. SO REALLY THE ONLY ADVICE I CAN GIVE IS WHEN YOU PHONE ETC TO CHECK OUT OPENING TIMES, GIVE THE DATES, JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY WILL BE OPEN THAT WEEK. oNCE AGAIN MANY TAHNKS INDEED TO ALL OF YOU WHO GAVE ADVICE AND SUPPORT TO ME BEFORE I WENT. HOPEFULLY I WON'T BE AS NERVOUS NEXT TIME I GO, BECAUSE I AM ALREADY MAKING PLANS TO GO OVER AGAIN NEXT YEAR.. NOW MY DAD, (ALSO IRISH) WANTS HIS TREE DOING, (AS HE SAYS, ' YOUR MUM WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WITH A FAMILY YOU KNOW!'- WE DID FIND HIS SISTERS GRAVE WHILST WE WERE OVER THERE. SO A SMALL SUCESS. THANKS A MILLION ANNA XX
