	Often sawyers worked in pairs - one stood in a pit in the ground over which the wood was rested and they worked a huge two handled saw, one man above the ground and the other (poor soul) under the wood. The top chap was called the ''top dog'' and the other one the ''underdog'' !! It was an extremely hard occupation and the men were renowned for the amount of fluids they could drink in a day..... 	Essentially it's a Saw-er - someone who saws. I guess the Y got put in years ago to make it easier to say. Christine
