Nell, I actually just tried to find him on the IGI, as I was curious about him again (I found the reference perhaps 15 years ago). Other names with him were a bit odd, so it very well could be Latin. An ancestor who died when she was 40 in 1869 was named Susanna(h). I had always 'known' her as Susanna(h) -- I was so surprised to find an ancestor referred to her as Susie -- she is still Susanna(h) to me, perhaps just out of respect (Susie seems too informal).

Lisa Your Ric could be Ricardus - Latin for Richard. Some records were written in Latin. I have some relatives who are Susanna/h in the baptism register but Susan on all the certs. nell

Hi Geoff. Yes, I'm nosey, I checked out the site. :~) Hi Tracey. Thank you for the list. Several years ago I found a possible ancestor named Ric. At the time I just thought it was the spelling from long ago (1700's). Now that you mention it, his name could have been Richard. Thank you, Laura. It's nice to hear other's experiences; makes mine more feasible. :~)

Regarding the barbarous murder of the post boy in *1732*, both he and he murderer were Tho - there is a picture of the headstone here- http://www.nettlehampc.info/history.html I discovered it last year when in Nettleham when looking for ancestors..

Thank you Helen, Fiona and Tracey. I've had a chance to look around the IGI and haven't found anything helpful if I look for someone named John. Perhaps if I write to the church I might come up lucky. But, thank you all for your comments; they're greatly appreciated (and something to keep in mind for future searches). PS Too bad about poor Thos Gardiner, eh?

Thomas is usually abbreviated to Thos. My instincts say its probably a mistranscription for Jno, which is short for John. nell

Hi Brenda. My family is waiting for me, but I couldn't resist checking here before I leave. The information is from the IGI, so it very well could be something besides Tho. Thank you so much for your idea. I never would have thought of that!! Can't wait to check tonight. Kind regards, Lisa

If you are convinced that this isn't a Thomas, is there any possibility that someone has misread a J? Jho?

Could Tho be an abbreviation for any name besides Thomas? (It is a male.) Thank you in advance for any suggestions -- I will be back here in a few hours. Thank you, Lisa.
