Thankyou Carolyn...thats fantastic.. If William was born in 1829 that would make him 22 approx at time of census... Funny enough though, William's father was Thomas..does it have their occupation? William was a mariner when he married in 1854...then owned his own business printing by 1861... Thanks again Carolyn

Hi Leeanne - By 1871 the census shows your William Knott as a Master Printer employing a number of staff. No sign of his father at all. There is a Thomas Knott born in about 1804 who at the time of the 1861 and 1871 censuses was a Chelsea pensioner, but I can't say if this is who you are looking for. If you want any more information from these census entries let me know.

If you can get a copy of the marriage certificate of William Knott, it will give his father's occupation at the time on that.

Hi Carolyn Thanks for that.. Linda..yes I do have his marriage certificate....all it states on it for Thomas's occupation is deceased....or at least what looks like deceased....both fathers have the same word...deceased.... Hmmmm...gets complicated doesn't it Thank you Leeanne

If William was a mariner, he may have been at sea in 1851. He would also probably have a seman's ticket. These are held at the National Archives at Kew. From these you can find out personal details and sometimes work out which voyages men were on at any time in the late 1840s and early 1850s
