If you want an easy way to remember WHY it means what it does... It's related to our word for CIRCLE - so it's 'round about' a date. It's used in any context to mean 'approximately' ... or 'round about', so you can use it for quantity (ca 5 tons; ca 5000 names on my tree - I wish; and such), temperature (ca 37 degrees), etc. as well.
