I am finding a number in my tree who were either baptised or married on 25 December - I suppose it makes sense a time when everyone in the family can make it - but it still seems strange to me. I'm not sure it is legal to get married on 25 December now, or maybe it is. Anyone else finding this date in their tree? Josie |

I've got a few with Christmas Day events. It was often the only day of the year that people didn't have to work and could therefore be in attendance |

Jess, I love that free bit. Maybe I'll mention that to my vicar on Sunday as my daughter is thinking of getting married next year. Got to be advantages for being his secretary. Josie |

From the early 1800s, everyone had Christmas Day off work. |

Yep, many Churches and Cathedrals did free marriages on Christmas Day. Manchester Cathedral did so many, the couples literally queued up the Aisle - over 200 marriages were performed there on Christmas Day, 1862. Olde Crone |

I've got a couple of Christmas day marriages. I assumed it was because everyone in the family would be together anyway and Christmas dinner/wedding reception would be a good way of keeping costs down whilst celebrating. But I think register offices are closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day now. I have great-grandparents who married on new year's day - a good start. nell |

I did some transcribing for a local FHS, of Phillimores marriages for the village. Loads got married on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, even New Years Day. Lisa |
