being no good at history events, would it be a good idea to put dates of battles and wars> as to why maybe some men did not appear on census for example, The Boer Wars was the name given to the South African Wars of 1880-1 and 1899-1902

Crimean War 1854-56. Doesn't explain why men were missing from a census, but it might be the reason for a gap between children.

1812 - 1815 - The War of 1812 between US and Great Britain just another one!

Ages ago I did a thread on wars. The main ones were Crimea in the 1850s, Boer wars in 1890s/1900s and the world wars 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. BUT conscription did not take place until 1916, so for all census purposes most people away at the wars would be regular soldiers. I do have a very annoying great-great grandfather who hid in 1841 and 1851 and then died before 1861, the crafty old so and so! nell

I got all excited then, thinking that you might have pinpointed the reason why I cannot find my James McLean (c 1859)! But unfortunately, married jan 1880, first child JAS 1880 and second OND 1881. When I find him I am going to get the biggest paperweight I can find and squash him with it! Abigail
