Julie Find out where the prison register is - usually they are in the county records office. This will have his details in and then you can look for newspaper reports. See if he was in prison in 1871/1891. nell |

Added By Helen Little Nell on 05/08/2005 10:53:34 | Update Once you know what the crime was, you can find the trial as the date should be in the prison register. Assize court details are at Kew, but they only give the names of the jury and witnesses and the verdict. Once you have the date of the trial you can check the local paper for a report of the trial, which would give more detail. If it was a capital charge (murder) then you could find the report in The Times too. This is online (you can join Bedfordshire virtual library to access) and is on microfilm at the London Metropolitan Archives as well as other places. nell |

i found a great uncle in Prison (Derby) 1881 and (Gillingham) 1891, started working back from the dates and found him sentenced to 5 years hard labour for stealing Sheep and later on 5 years hard laboure for stealing 2 cows, i belive on the second sentance he was inprisoned in Derby in 1889, but has it was a 5 year hard labour stretch he was sent to Gillingham to serve it, serching through the papers i have come across some very interesting court cases. |

You may want to read throught this research guide on criminal ancestors: www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=120 Generally if the info isn't in the county records office it should be at Kew. nell |
