Hello, can anyone tell me how to get more info on a British star medal from 1914-15 please? I would like to find out about the numbers etc on the back, regiment and rank info I assume. All tips gratefully accepted - I have looked on ebay to no avail. Thanks, Jen

The infomation on the back of the star is__Service number of the person ---name and regiment,,,,, The Star 1914--1915- 1914--1918 was given to all who went on foreign soil,,,,, But you can lots more info by 'googling' ' war medals' there are lots of sites,,, kay,

Thanks Kay I have now found info about who got the medals etc from googling, it's the abbreviations I need to track down. It says 351 GNR.A.BMBR - J. MC FADDEN R.G.A So 351 is his service no, then is GNR gunner? or a regiment? or is RGA a regiment? Thanks for your help, tried Access to Archives but not on my PC so can't change browser setting etc. X Jen

RGA is Royal Garrison Artillery. If you have name and number, his records MAY survive at Kew. Most don't, but if you are lucky there are all sorts of additional details. Age, address, occupation, height, eyesight, next of kin, etc etc etc

Thanks Brenda, will keep looking. He's not mine, and if I can't connect him to my friend's family she wants to sell the medal. She doesn't know the surname and thinks a family friend may have given her it many moons ago. Would be nice if I could track down his descendants rather than just flog it to anyone, I think. xx Jen

ooh, got some more on him - at least I'm tracing someone's rellie! so if someone goes to Kew, could they get me a copy of the info to save me 3.50? if so I'll look for kew visitors :-)

If your friend can hold on to the medal for a few weeks, I will be going back to Kew and check this out for you, but not before September.
