You don't need to 'Edit Master Sources' for each census entry. I have a Master Source type of 'UK Census' and just add entries in that Source type through the source citations for individuals. I use a format like this for the 'Citation Page' field... 1861 RG9 Piece 245 Folio 140 Page 13 This then produces a footnote citation entry in a Genealogy Report that looks like this... 'UK Census, 1861 RG9 Piece 245 Folio 140 Page 13.' I type the details of the census record into the 'Citation Text' box. You can add an image of the census to the citation too if you want, but I generally keep them as separate JPG files. Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia |

For Joan This is how I save the census images in FTM, it's much easier than it looks written down. You need to save your census image as a jpg file on your PC in an obvious place that you can easily find. Then in FTM you need to enter Edit Master Sources by clicking the Edit command on the top task bar and choosing Edit Master sources. You can then add the details of your census and then click the add image button. All you need to do then is click on the 'from file' option & follow the instructions to link it to your saved file. I hope you can follow this. Helen |

On Family tree maker I just add the written census record under Notes but if you want you can also add the image. |

I use LEGACY and that uses Events where you record things like censuses and anything else you want to add. My system is that I put the details for the household in the Source Details i.e. Census Piece Number, Folio Number and Page NUmber. Then a summary for each person in the household. I also usually add an image of the census page. I then add a series of events for each person CENSUS - Age, Date, Address RESIDENCE - Head/Wife/Son/etc, Date, Address OCCUPATION - occupation and date MARITAL STATUS (if relevent) with Date I also work out the year of birth from the age. If it is the same as what I already have recorded then I just add the Source to that Event. If the date or place of birth is significantly different then I will add an Alternative Birth Event with Source. If I don't have any later information on the person then I put 'AFT 1871' or whatever in the date of death. Again with Source. This is just my own personal system which I find convenient. I could probably combine all the information into one Event but I prefer this way. MB |

There ar a number of ways of doing this. I have added a selction of facts to cover the main census info such as address and occupation. Just decide on your heading such as Census Address, Census Occupation, Census Info, etc type it into the 'Type' box and select yes when prompted to create a new fact. You only need to do this once as it is then added to the list. As each fact has a date and text associated with it this is ideal. For other info I tend to use the free text notes box. I add the BMD info here, in abbreviated from e.g. GRO Deaths Mar 1899 Huddersfield 9a 205 Gelder Joseph 47 or perhaps burial notes Name Joseph GELDER Date 15 Mar 1899 Aged 47 Place Farnley Tyas Description St Lucius Denomination Anglican County code WRY |

Or any of the family tree software for that matter? I have loads of records I don't know how to organise them. Need to get some software to get myself organised really because my paper records are getting a bit haphazard but I'm really keen on tracing ancestors through censuses and not just recording births/marriages/deaths so wonder if the software is able to do this? Thanks in advance! Sharon |
