Hello Lib, I've had a look and it looks like 'wide'! It deffinitely doesn't look like the other mars and ums on the page so, it could well be widower. He was only 20, what a shame. Helenxx

Hi Liberty It looks like it says Wide! lol. But I suspect it's Wid which is short for Widow or Widower Jeanette x

Hi Helen Thanks for taking the time to look! Yes only 20, thats why Im not sure if it reads widower, although they did seem to marry very young back then. Lib

I haven't looked, myself, but could the supposed E be an R?... Widr is not an unusal abbreviation of Widower. Christine

Looking at a few pages either side it certainly looks as if this says 'wider' - i.e. widdower. I had a little look for some deaths around that time in the area and there were lots so I had a look for a marriage so that I could link it up with a death. I found one registered in June 1857 Manchester 8d 136 - Unfortunately the only other person on the page for that reference was JAMES Murray !!! ??? I will try a few more sites but perhaps this info may help? Regards, Dea
