Can anyone help me. Which genealogy sites online are really worth getting subs for other than genes reunited. I dont want to join a site that is no good so I would rather get oppinions from others to whether they are good or not. That is why I joined Genes reunited. Please help if you can |

Hi Penelope, I really think that Ancestry.com is the best site to belong to I have had a lot of success since I joined them and their census look ups are good quality. Leigh |

I would have to say Ancestry is one of the best. Others I'm really happy with are Familyhistoryonline and 1837. Sarah |

The obvious one - if you are searching for ancestors in England & Wales in the 19th century - is Ancestry. Reasonable annual sub and for that you get unlimited access to E&W censuses from 1861 - 1901, with 1851 & 1841 promised in the near future. Also has many smaller databases which can be of use, such as Pallots marriage & baptism indexes, BMD's from 1983-2002, and some parish records. |

Thank you for that. I will definately consider the ones you have suggested. It was great when I didnt have to pay to get info but since I am now looking for people that are on the 1900's Im going to need to pay. I didnt want to pay for a site that was go9ing to rip me off. So now I know that there are people using the site and I can talk to you guys and now they are ok I will deifnately look at joining up. Thank you again and have a good week. Kind Regards Penny |

I kept putting off joining Ancestry even though I'd read what good value it was. Since I shelled out, I've looked at loads of images and saved a large number of them for future enjoyment. If I'd spent out on 1837's 1861 census and the 1901 census online, I'd have spent a fortune by now - and that wouldn't have given me access to the 1871, 1881 and 1891 images - nor the Pallot's marriage slips. The initial outlay seems a lot, but, spread over the year, it's very good value. You do have to be aware that they have some 'interesting' or 'challenging' (i.e. wrong) transcriptions (no worse than 1901 online) and that there are a few gaps... There's a thread somewhere listing the missing 1861 piece-numbers. Scotlands People is good (or I reckon so) if you have family to trace in Scotland. 1837Online is invaluable if you really have to get specific records which aren't available on FreeBMD. To be fair about the 1861 census - it has a more sophisticated search system than Ancestry, in that it allows you to search for combinations of names, I believe. If you're hunting for SMITHs and BROWNs, that might be your only hope! Christine |

I would definitely have a look at Curious Fox site. You can list your relations in the actual area they lived, this often gets a match, I have so far found a descendant of my grandfathers brother and several other useful items of information. I even found my mothers best friend who lived next door to her when she was in her twenties [she's 80 now] and they are now in contact with each other. Well worth the few pounds to join. |

Penelope. Try the 2 week free trial for Ancestry. They do this because once you try it you will be hooked. Love it. Margaret |
