Stephen Report 1 Aug 2005 17:14

I have email Richard Durack at Newham Archives without receiving a reply on the subject of an incident in 1944 in which my great-great-uncle was killed in the Royal Victoria Gardens in North Woolwich. Can anyone suggest how I might find out about this incident ? Steve

Not sure if the CWGC site has civilian casualties?

Report in the local newspaper? I would contact the relevant library service and ask if they have old newspapers on microfilm. Nell

Civilian casualties are listed on CWGC. Unfortunately not much info is given apart from the standard ' killed by enemy action' (Actually in my G aunts case this wasn't true as it was our side testing munitions that killed her)

Not sure why you wanted Newham, as Woolwich is in London Borough of Greenwich. Perhaps you could contact: Greenwich Heritage Centre 020 8854 2452 Nell

Many thanks for the advice and info. I have now received a reply from Newham Archives giving an extract from the Stratford Express reporting on the incident which was a V1 attack. My relative was identified as a Mr A Rowling, but the death certificate states Frederick Rowling aged 63. Frederick Rowling also appears as a civilian casualty on the CWGC website. However the family was told at the time that Albert had been killed so this looks like another mystery to investigate ! Steve
