Looking up records at Kew

Can someone please tell me how do you in look up Army records at Kew and how much does it cost? . My cousin is going to go there to search for our grndfathers army records, we know his regiment but not his army number Bren

You don't say when he was in the army - I have not used the records myself, but I know that if it is 1st WW records you want that only a third of the records survive as they were burnt during WW2. If it is WW1, then you should be able to get his number from the medal indexes. You can search online and download the card which costs £3.50, or you can find it on microfiche and copy it for 25p when you get to Kew. It's free to search. You have to pay for copies, but this depends on what you are copying - ie whether its loose paper or microfilm etc. Please check that Kew will have the records for the timeframe you want and pre-register before you go to save time. You will need to take some form of identification with you and they are very strict about what they allow you to take into the search rooms. nell

I believe kew only has army records up to world war 1. World War 2 army records are still with the ministry of defence, so you will not find these at Kew. You have to apply to the ministry of defence who will search for his/her records for a fee, but you must be the nearest living relative.
