I have managed to trace a distant grandparent with his mother, but the father is dead. How do i look up his birth to find who his mother and father are? Its in the Bury St Edmonds area of Suffolk.

In the 1861 census i have Harriet Osborne as Head b1819, Alfred Osborne b1844, another name and then Ellen Osborne b1860. The father must have died between Harriet getting pregnant and the 1861 census, but i have no idea who he was. a birth cert would give me the info or a baptism, but i dont know where to look to find it. just updated! on the census, it says unmarried. would it def say widow if she was?

found this birth registration - only one on ancestry for 1860, Suffolk Name: OSBORNE, Ellen Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1860 District: Stow County: Suffolk Volume: 4a Page: 437 That should have father's name and maybe mother's maiden name.

Looks to me like your Harriet was a naughty girl. I would apply for Birth Certs for her children and see what comes up. Its happened to all of us. One of mine had 6 children before she married, another had 3, and my Grandad's mum has no father on her birth cert.
