TRACED MARTHA S. SMITH. IN 1891 AND 1881 CENSUS, BUT IN THE 1871 CENSUS SHE HAS BECOME, MARTHA (HEEL) SMITH........ THE '1837 ONLINE.COM' TRANSLATOR HAS INTERPRETED THE ENUMERATORS WORD AS (HEEL), ON CLOSER INSPECTION OF BIRTHS FOR 1869 THE YEAR OF HER BIRTH, SHE IS REGISTERED AS MARTHA (STEELE) SMITH...WEIRD SECOND NAME I KNOW, BUT HOPE I'M BACK ON TRACK....IS THE MORAL OF THE STORY CHECK, CHECK AND THEN CHECK AGAIN.. |

Yes, you're right, check, check and check again. I would imagine her middle name might help your research, as I would imagine it is a surname from somewhere in the family, either her mother's maiden name or a name of a grandparent etc. p.s. don't take anything an enumerator writes down at face value. I know someone who had a Heal in his tree who turned out to be a Steel as a Christian Name and I also have someone with Steel as a middle name and the Steel turned out to be the mothers maiden name. |
