quite excited to have made contact with 2 very nice people who have allowed me access to their tress and share their info but whilst they have about 4 different spellings of the surname in their trees, sometimes a couple in the same branch........my question is how would i/we ever know the correct spelling of the surname?? i just stuck to the same spelling in my version however i saw it spelt...... is the igi spelling the one thats right??? or will i never really know?? kaz |

I guess you'll never know. that is, i suppose how surnames evolve. one of mine seems to start Mechel>>MIchel>>MiTchel>Mitchell, with Michael somewhere in the middle! |

Surnames have changed over the years due to how they are spelt on the parish registers. I wouldn't trust the IGI for the correct spelling, but compare several sources (BMD indexes and Census) and see how the majority spell that name for the current generation. |

No such thing as 'correct' spelling when people couldn't write; change of vicar, change of spelling. Shakespeare COULD write, but all 6 of his surviving signatures have different spellings, with none of them 'Shakespeare'! |

thank you all for taking the time to reply...........i'll take the line that they are all spelt correctly in their own way.....will now take a long hard look at missing relatives in other branches..... ive found the odd mistranscribe but not thought about it in the ways you've pointed out kaz |
