As I can't find my great grandmother in 1861, (my Keeping up with the JONES' thread) I was hoping to find her last known address and her address at marriage (1865) and look up and down the street in the hope that she is there, but wrongly transcribed. Can I do this? How? |

I'm not sure if you have the marriage certificate and address or not but if you have you try putting it in your browser bar and looking at the results? Also if you have access to ancestry.com look at the district of Southampton that you know and it's number and look at the description that the ennumerator gives for clues. Sometimes you just have to check all the descriptions. Jill |

Thank you Jill, I'll try that. Yes, I have been searching for Charlotte on Ancestry. Because she was probably in a very built up part of Southampton, I was hoping to find some way of looking for known street names, then looking up and down the houses, (and round a few corners too) Gwyn |

Your best bet is to use 1837online's version of the 1861 census, as that is indexed & searchable by address. You can do a free search for the street, which would at least confirm that the street existed. It then costs 3 credits (approx 30p) to view the image and see the names. However, once you've looked at 1 image on 1837, make a note of the piece/folio/page number and you can then find it on Ancestry and view adjacent pages on there. Richard |

Richard That sounds very logical and straight forward, thank you. Her whole family seem to be missing, JONES. It could be that they've died since 1851 but ALL of them? As I know that Charlotte was alive, I've been concentrating on her, hoping it will lead me to the others as well. I don't want to be beaten, but in the end I have her in all other census' after that so it doesn't hinder research, but I'd just like to 'tidy up' the 1861. Perhaps they never were counted though. |
