Does anyone have access to the Ancestry Parish & Probate records? I'm looking for info on Arthur James Wilkinson who was probably born in either Berkshire or Devon. It's quite a rare name in the south, especially in the period I'm interested in. He was born c.1859-1863. If anyone could have a quick look-up for me I'd be v grateful. Steven Wilkinson

Can't help with the parish/probate records. I can't find this chap on the IGI or the 1881 census. No one of that name born Berks or Devon on Ancestry civil reg, though there are these gentlemen: WILKINSON, Arthur James 1864 June Births Hackney Greater London London Middlesex WILKINSON, Arthur James 1864 June Births Islington Greater London London Middlesex WILKINSON, James Arthur 1860 December Births Rotherhithe London Surrey WILKINSON, James Arthur 1864 March Births Bradford West Riding of Yorkshire Where did you get his rough date of birth from? nell

The dates of the censuses were 5 April 1891 Aged 28 - born in Devon giving birth year of 1862/1863 depending on whether or not his birthday was before/after census night] and 31 March 1901 Aged 39 - 1901 census, born in Drayton, Berkshire [birth year of 1861/62] Died aged 79 in 1939 'in his 80th year' [birth year 1859] Ages on death certs are often a little out as the informant often does not know how old the person was. But its odd you can't find him on 1881. Do you have an idea of his father's name/occupation? nell

Father's name also Arthur James Wilkinson. He was a correspondent according to son's marriage cert. The younger put his age as 28 at his marriage, which was September 1889. Steven

No Arthur Wilkinson in Devon or Berkshire Parish Probates. But isn't c1860 a bit late for probate records? Most of them are early 1800s and before. Have you looked on 1837 for his birth? Chloe

If he was 28 in Sep 1889 (marriage cert) he couldn't have been 28 in April 1891 (census). Have you seen the actual census image/is the age on the cert quite clear? nell

1881 census - I've been looking at Arthur J father/son combinations on www.familysearch.org: Household Record 1881 British Census Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability Arthur J. I see Arthur senior is a 'housekeeper'? The neighbours have a variety of jobs including harness maker and soldier in the grenadier guards. There's another householder, a woman, who is also a housekeeper. nell

Hi There are quite a few Wilkinsons on the 1861/71 &81 census at Drayton, no Arthurs but a couple of James'. Also Arthur James Williams. Nothing likely so far in Devon. I've saved the images if you'd like to see them. Heather
