Jones - census mistranscription

Having had little success in tracing my Jones ancestors, I noticed how much the handwritten J looked like an S on many census returns. Having searched under Sones, Soans and Soanes, I have now matched families who on other earlier, and later, censuses appeared as Jones.

Alison I've also noticed S and T being mistaken - one of my Smoothy great-great-aunts turned up as Timothy. Its a nuisance that they wrote such florid capitals as if the first bit of the name is in a totally different part of the alphabet it takes some doing to find it. nell
