I've hit a brick wall. I've been trying to find out some more information about my Scottish great grandfather but he's very elusive. I know that he was a gunner in the RGA from his marriage certificate. How would I be able to obtain his military records and what sort of information would they include? Thank you, Lucia :-)

Hi Lucia What period are you talking? Is it WW1, or later? WW1 records, where they survive, are on microfilm at Kew. I think that later records are held by the Ministry of Defence. There are several threads on tips about this. I'll see if I can find one to nudge up.

Hi Brenda, it's WW1 (he married in 1918 while on leave from France). I believe he was involved in Battle of the Somme in 1916. I wondered if the records would have any details about his family. Thank you very much Lucia :-)

I understand that you need to apply to somewhere like the MOD with a lot of information and some cash. My uncle is trying to do it for my grandfather and is struggeling they ask for information like I ID number...

Lucia One place you can start is the NA website and the WW1 campaign medal index. If you know his name it is a help, but beware if there are several servicemen with the same name and also in the RGA. Do you have his medals? The name/service number and regiment are stamped on the rim. You can download his medal card index for Pnds 3.50 but it might only comfirm what you already know. The WW1 army service records are held a Kew on microfilm, but about two thirds were destroyed in the blitz. You can either search yourself, ask a member on here if they are going to Kew to have a look, or pay a researcher to look. Ian
