Been looking on Census for ages. Name on birth certificate Ann Helena Stephens. She turns up on 1901 as Nellie Stevens Don't they make it difficult? KLinda

Congratulations! And now you know what she was known as, as well as her birth name. Most of us haven't a clue what our ancestors were actually called in everyday life, because the vicar or the registrar or the enumerator has insisted on using their 'proper' names.

That's not hard. So far I've found great grannie called Ann, Annie, Hannah and Maria. Surname Cowley, Cawley, Halford and probably Coley (waiting for certificate). Age gives different year of birth on 1861 census, 1871 census, marriage in 1874, 1881 census, marriage in 1893 and 1901 census. I HATE the woman.
