I am just about to start transcribing my first CD for FreeCEN but am confused as to what software to download. Do I use IN-CENS or SSCENS?

I use SSCENS. Also download Genie while your there! Helps with palcenames and counties We've got a help thread running so I'll nudge it for you in anticipation! LOL

Hi Jeanette. I have followed your instructions to download SSCENS but on my desktop I have all the icons you list EXCEPT the SSCENS one? When I go to RUN and type in SSCENS.EXE it tells me it cannot be found? HELP!!

Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner but I've been at the cinema with my youngest! I'm not very good at the technical side I'm afraid. But have you tried going to Add/Remove Programs and removing everything you have downloaded, and then try uplosding again Jeanette x

Hi Jeanette. Hope you enjoyed the cinema. I have re-downloaded it and have a SSCENS icon on my desktop now but when I click it all i get is a black box with blurb at the top and saying Warning README.HTM already exists, overwrite y/n?

Hi Eagles, i transcribe for Freecen and i had trouble downloading the stuff from the site, my co-ordinator told me after several attempts all i really needed was a spreadsheet, and i have been happily transcribing for around 6 months now with no problems at all, i did print off the relationship and county abbreviation chart, i also downloaded the Genie which is essential. Hope this helps Belle.

Hi Belle. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is confused!! I've got to work today so won't get a chance to do anything but will have another go over the weekend (kids permitting). I have managed to get the blank Excel spreadsheet to open so presumably once I put the CD into the computer all will become clear?? BTW What is 'Genie'? Sue

Hi Sue Yes the SSCENS box is just full of 'blurb' but I wasn't sure if it was required to run everything else! Seems Belle has answered that one for us. When setting up the spreadsheet, have a look in READ ME for instructions. Now, I have never been able to get mine set up as a CSV. file, although I did get half way there this time! lol. But my co-ordinator, Carol, says she doesn't mind if I send mine to her as an Excel file, cos she can covert it. Genie is a program you can download from the same page as SSCENS. It is very useful for locating place names and counties. Good Luck! Jeanette x
