Advice on 1851 Census

I asked for someone to do me an 1851 Essex census look up. Someone was kind enough to try, but couldn't find the parish I was interested, Belchamp Otten, listed. She suggested the parish may have been part of Suffolk that year as it is so close to the border. Someone else was kind enough to send me a fantastic link to a site which has census information from Essex for 1851, and I found the people I wanted on it in that parish. Unfortunately it doesn't separate the households or give occupations. It does however give a folio number - 71 So my question is this. Because I would like to request a look up again so I can get the other details, can the folio number tell me what county the census relates to, or does each county use the same numbers? Thanks, Sharon |

http://www.fhsc(.)org(.)uk/genuki/REG/ess(.)htm Always use this site to find out registration districts within Counties like Essex. Belchamp Otten is a sub-district of Sudbury in Essex. EDIT: Sorry, I misunderstood the problem. |

Sharon The folio number is simply the renumbered sheets (consisting of two pages, with the folio number stamped on the top right-hand corner of each odd-numbered page) and therefore they are repeated on every census piece. For a unique reference you therefore need both the piece and folio number. Richard |

Isn't the 1851 Essex Census CDs indexed? |

Hi Giles. I believe they are, but the lady who did the lookup for me said that my parish and some surrounding ones weren't included. I guess I could ask someone with the Suffolk CD to have a look on there for me. Sharon |

In that case, your lookup can't have the complete set of CDs. That parish definitely comes under Essex, and there's a website I found with an 1851 index specifically for the parish in question. I'll get the link... |

Thanks Giles, but that is the link I mentioned I was given in my first posting. As I said, it lists my people, but I need a marital status, occupations and would like to know who exactly was in the one household. I will ask for another lookup! Thanks everyone, Sharon |

You can view the Essex 1851 census online at www.stepping-stones(.)co.uk . It is pay per view and there is no names index, but if you know the piece number that shouldn't be a problem. Richard |
