How many years was the age out? Was he in the right registration district? Was his name common - ie John smith, or uncommon like Augustus Fortesque-Benks? nell

Hi Nell, You must be sick of me lol his age should of been 56 but on the one i found it was 47 and the district was right . I checked from 1929 to 1939 that this one was the only one, his name is Joseph Fothergill regards June

Out by 9 years. Well I guess that could be him, especially if the informant wasn't a close relative - but you'd only find out by getting the death cert. Is there something you could use to check its him, such as his occupation? nell

It depends who registered the death. We have someone who married for the 3rd time, shall we say at a reduced age. We are guessing that this might be to be a more 'suitable' age for his bride. At his death, the age she gave reflected this lie, and she wouldn't have known any better.

June Good news! My uncle registered his father's death (my grandfather) and got his birthdate out by a year. I think this is because my grandfather lied about his age to join the army and maybe my uncle was going by his army papers. The place of birth is also wrong. I contacted the register office, but it is such a palaver to put it right - first I have to send them details which they pass on to the GRO who decide whether or not I am right. Then I have to go to that register office in person - its miles away - and have the amendments corrected. Don't think I will bother, but you can see how years ago mistakes didn't get corrected - if the people knew they were mistakes in the first place! nell
