Hi Does anyone know what the policy was on this subject? I have read they were not included on the birth or death indexes. Were still-births recorded at all? Thanks Samantha

Hallo Stillbirths weren't recorded at all until 1927. After that they were on a Stillbirth Register which is closed to the public. You can only get information about it if you are a parent or sibling of the stillborn child. More info here: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/stillbirths/ Babies who die after being born alive should be in the births AND death registers. This hasn't changed. Nell

Isn't that just awful, not being registered , like they never existed!

Well they were born dead, so technically they didn't exist. Same as miscarried babies. Its quite amazing to think that nowadays babies can be born prematurely and survive, that years ago would have died at birth. I agree its sad not to have a record though - my great-grandmother had 3 surviving children, three that died after birth and apparently had another 3 pregnancies, but I don't know if these resulted in miscarriage or stillbirth. Hi Nell Thanks for the info. My g.grandmother is reputed to have had 4 sets of twins but only 2 show up in the births/deaths indexes. So we may never be able to prove the legend. This was pre1927 of course. Best wishes Sam
