I am trying to trace a relative who went over to Canada in 1928 - probably as a 'Home Child'. It is stated that he was 16 at the time and I hve a date of birth on his death cert. which I have traced in Vancouver. I cannot find his birth. Perhaps the dob is not correct? Would he have needed a passport at that time in order to travel? - If so where would he have applied ?- I may be able to trace his birth details from this. Can anyone help Thanks, Dea |

Hi Kay, I know what ship he went on and when he arrived but I haven't been able to find a passenger list. I found something that suggested that he was amongst boys taken over by a charitable organisation but nothing to say which one. Dea x |

Dea, this doesn't answer any of your questions, but I have quite a few ancestors who didn't use their first names, or switched names. Example: Joseph Harry was known as 'Har'; James Joseph was sometimes recorded as James, sometimes as Joseph. Perhaps your relative could have used a middle name? Perhaps you already have seen this site, but Library and Archives Canada has information about home children (click on ArchiviaNet in upper right corner) 1869-1930 and immigration records 1925-1935 http://www*collectionscanada.ca/index-e.html (replace * with .) |

Thanks for the suggestion Lisa, I have tried looking at ALL the possible Shaw's born within a few years of his date of birth, even though his name SHOULD have been Clifford. I really think the dob on his death cert must be wrong, that is why I was hoping for a possible passport application. Thanks for your suggestion anyway, Dea x |

Dea, there's an immigration record on inGeneas -- they charge a fee though. Born circa 1912. http://www*ingeneas*com/ingeneas/index.html (replace * with .) I usually try to find the record elsewhere, then use inGeneas as a last resort. I'll see if I can find it anywhere and let you know. From inGeneas: Age: b. 1912 Year: 1928 Price: $5.50US; $6.77Cdn. Description: Immigration List: British Boys brought to Canada by Immigration Associations - Typical records in this document contain the following information: name of boy; name of ship that brought him in; date of birth; date of arrival in Canada. PS Just checked the immigration records on the National Archives site (mentioned earlier) and found Clifford Shaw. I THINK the inGeneas information would be identical to the information supplied by the National Archives site for Clifford so I don't THINK it would be worth ordering the record from InGeneas. |

Most likely a coincidence, since his nationality is Irish, but thought I would mention that an Andrew Shaw, age 24, was also on board Clifford's ship. |

Thanks Lisa, I had found this on the Archives site but couldn't order it and pay on line from England. I have just been into the ingeneas site you mentioned and it let me pay and will send it by e-mail so I have ordered it from there. I'm waiting now - I have to warn you, I have NO patience whatsoever so I will have to be on here 'day and night' until it comes. It's all YOUR fault - Thanks VERY much for the info. Regards, Dea |

Dea :~) I've ordered records from them, and have been extremely happy with the site. I think I've waited as long as one week. Hope they are able to give you what you need. Lisa |
