If unknown is on a marriage certificate as the father of the groom does this mean the groom is illegitimate or the father has died, this is in the1800s, thanks, Liz. |

I think it probably means illegitimate, though usually a blank is left. On my gt grandmother's marriage cert it says very clearly 'illegitimate daughter of Susan Barnes' in that column. If the father is dead, it would say 'Fred Bloggs (deaceased)'. Though there are certs where the father isn't stated as deceased when he is, and vice versa! nell |
