Died twenty fifth of July 1844 at Horton Heath Parish of South Stoneham CHARLES DUFFIN male 68 years Labourer Cause of death inflamation of bowels Signature, description and residence of informant Charles Duffin Inmate occupier deceased Horton Heath Registered twenty sixth july 1844 I am confused by the informant part, i have no record of another Charles Duffin, although i suppose it could be another son (I have only found one son for Charles and Elizabeth and that is My GtX3 Grandfather William. Do you think inmate means he died in the workhouse/hospital? there was one at S Stoneham. If so why isn't the union mentioned in the address? Am I missing something? Any ideas? Ann glos

Ann Which column is the 'occupier deceased' part of the cert in? Perhaps if the workhouse was the only institution in the area, the registrar thought 'inmate' was self-explanatory! nell

How about looking into the 'other' Charles on the 1841 Ann, not that you have anything to go on, just wondered if he was anywhere near your one then Sam

Montmorency Report 26 Jul 2005 12:47

there's a list of people qualified to register deaths: 1) relatives 2) anyone present at the death 3) the occupier of the house, or if the occupier is the person who's died, anybody else living in the house 4) whoever is organising the burial ('causing the body to be buried') 'Inmate' was the term used for anybody living in the house, apart from the householder. The 'occupier deceased' bit is just to explain that the occupier wasn't the informant because it was his death being registered. Workhouse deaths were registered by the workhouse master. I think you may have found another relative here

I'd say you have probably found another relative of Charles, also called Charles (could be son, brother, nephew etc.), although living at the same address, more likely to be a son I suppose. Kath. x

thank you all for your input, sorry not to have replied earlier had to 'do' Sainsbury's. Nell occupier deceased is in the informant part. Somebody looked at 1841 for me and came up with a Charles Duffin age 65 which I assume is this Charles, then there was actually a Charles Duffin and she though the age might be 30 and the Elizabeth living with him the age looked like 50 but apparently she couldn't read South stoneham parish very well. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a son Charles. This family is the bane of my life, there are so many Duffin families around the area and all mine are either charles or william. I really need to get to the records office to have a proper look. Charles was actually born 1774 I do have the list of baptisms for S stoneham courtesy og Hants Gen Soc. But that is OK 2 years out on the death cert is nothing. I will have to look for another son then. Many thanks again for your help. Ann Glos

On 1881 there is a Charles Duffin (1811) and wife Ann Duffin living in Winchester St Botley. My GtX 3 Grandfather William Duffin (1830) and his wife Ann Duffin (see what I mean about repetitious names?) also live at Winchester St Botley, so the chances are that this Charles is my older Charle's (1774) son and William's Gt Uncle. To complicate matters William (1830) had a brother Charles Duffin (1834). So the informant could have been either. Or is he???? I know I need to visit the record office sometime but can anyone suggest anything else I can do on line to check out these names? Charles birth (1811 is not on the IGI). Ann glos
