I have quite a few 'Shared Trees' and am moving the Info. from them manually -- a tedious job as you will agree, I am not a spring chicken in fact more of an old turkey really so mostly self taught on computers, but realise that there must be a quicker and easier way of doing it. Help would be appreciated, and as you will have gathered, in as simple and full an explanation as possible would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for any help given. Thanks for the various replies to my query, as Elizabeth Robinson says, I am referring to the shared trees that I have been given access to on the G.R. Site, if Judy In The States or anyone else knows of a way round this problem I would be grateful, would it be possible to copy and paste specific details (As I said before I am not by any means a computer expert and only know the bare basics of copy and pasting) would I be able to copy this from the shared tree that I have access to, and then save it somewhere and then paste it in my own tree. I hope you understand what I am trying to say -- thanks a lot, Danny. |

Danny: The shared tree(s) or information you have, did it come to you in .ged format? If so, what family tree program are you using? Without knowing the answers to the above I can touch base briefly on your dilemna.....if the info you have is in .ged format and you have a family tree program that contains your information you will need to open your family tree program. At the top of your screen there will be an IMPORT option under one of the headings....look under each to find the option (ie look under FILE, EDIT, etc..... If you click IMPORT (once you find it) on this you will be have a box that pops up.....this box will allow you to scroll through your PC to find the .ged formatted files that you have obtained and want to add to your own tree. Once your double click on the file you wish to add and then click on OK, the new information should now be added to your family tree program. I can give more detailed instructions once I know what program you have and what format your new information came to you in, should you need more help. Judy |

Judy I think he means Shared Trees on this site when somebody else has given access to view. As far as I know GR has still not provided a way of merging them. Beth :) |

On Genesreunited the only way to transfer info from a shared tree is manually. Whilst this is a tedious job I suppose if we were able to merge the trees there would then be a tedious task of removing all those on the shared tree who are not related. eg my tree has nearly 1500 people but anyone who I open it too is only going to be related to a much smaller number of those people on one branch. |
