I am missing someone from the 1901 census, possibly in the armed forces abroad, is there anywhere online I can search for him (pref for free!)?

Do you have any reason to believe he was in the forces - he might have been in the 2nd Boer war and if you google that you might find info. But the most usual reason for not finding 1901 rellies is the awful mistranscriptions. Have you tried searching using first name, age and place of birth only, or just surname and place of birth? I do know that some bits of 1901 are missing - around Deal, Kent area. nell

Are you thinking he might have been in S Africa for the Boer War? There's a website that I don't remember the name of (lol) that was going to be adding lists of Boer War army personel ''soon'' which was about a couple of months back. Maybe someone else will remember the name of it (I think you may have had to subscribe to it though lol) Was your rellie an officer? If he was, then he might get a brief mention in The Times newspaper. I have access to their archives if you need it. Sarah
