HI I am looking for a 'missing' relative who appears on both the 1881 and 1901 census returns but I can't find anywhere on the 1891 census. There is, however, a similarly named prisoner in Strangeways Prison in 1891. I want to check whether the name was mistranscribed in the census - does anyone know if a prisoner list is available for female prisoners? She would have been admitted between 1881 and 1891. Are there any other records I could check? Thanks in advance. |

Prisoners are listed in the prison registers, which give details of birth, descriptions, details of crime, length of sentence etc. Registers are usually in the county records office unless very recent. nell |

Have you been able to see the actual image? - i.e. is the possible mistranscription at the original enumeration, or in the modern search site? Christine |

Hi Jo. A lot of the records for Strangeways were lost when the prisoners rioted a few years ago Bren |
