HIYA ALL, CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ADVICE/HELP. AFTER MONTHS &MONTHS OF DIGGING AROUND AND GETTING NOWHERE, I HAVE TAKEN THE PLUNGE, I AM GOING OVER TO IRELAND TO LOOK UP THE LOST RELLIES. BUT ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN GIVEN LOTS OF INFO (DATES ETC/DISTRICTS) I HAVE UP TO NOW, NEVER ACTUALLY BEEN TO LOOK ANYTHING UP. ANY TIPS/HELP/ADVICE WOULD BE MORE THAN WELCOME. I AM GOING OVER FOR 4 DAYS AND LEAVE TUESDAY. PLEASE WISH ME LUCK, AND ANY ENCOURAGEMENT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AS WOULD ANY REPLIES. FEELING NERVOUS BUT EXCITED, IS THIS NORMAL.???? |

Nervous but excited sounds normal to me. Where are you going to look things up - check if there's a webaddress for it first and see about opening hours, regulations, etc. Ireland is a beautiful place, so take some time out to enjoy the scenery. nell |

I would think the same advice as for visiting any record office. Take pencils, change for copying machines, a notebook. I am sure the staff will be very pleased to help so don't be afraid to ask. They are used to these questions we may think daft! Good hunting. Hope you find loads of useful information as well as have fun meeting a new cousin Jane |

Churches might not have the parish registers and even if they do, they won't let you in until you've jumped through hoops of fire and made an appointment. Take plenty of ID when you go to places. Take pencils (not pens), a notebook, plenty of change and don't forget reading glasses if you need them! Oh, and above all else - you'll need patience! Good luck |

Hi, goodluck, I too oneday in the near future will be travelling to Ireland to search endlessy for my rellies. It is so unfortunate that the records are not available online, although on familysearch.org I have possibly found my grt granny's birth in Meath in the IGI records. I say that it is unfortunate, but Ireland is a beautiful country and it is a great excuse to go over and visit. Once agian good luck sophie x |

Most people involved in this business are really helpful and won't mind you showing your 'ignorance' as you call it. they'll be only too pleased to help. |
