If I email a gedcom file to someone from PAF, do they need to have PAF to be able to open the file? Thanks Lou

Hi Lou. No, a gedcom file is universal and can be opened with any family history program, if they have not got a FH program then a gedcom file will not be a lot of good to them unless they locate, download and install a gedcom file viewer program. I belive that there are one or two available on the internet but have no experience of them. Good luck Carol www.genealogyprinters(.)com

Thanks Carol I'm emailing it to my bro in law so he can burn it to disc for me as a backup (I work off laptop so no CD re-write facility) I'll get him to download PAF then, sort my disc out for me then he can always uninstall the program once he's finished Much appreciated Lou

I don't think he would need to open a file in order to burn it to disk, so should not need a program. Just 'drag' the file from the e-mail to desktop, then copy to CD.

Geoff is quite correct in saying that the person who receives the gedcom does not need to open it to burn it to a CD. Has your laptop got a floppy disk drive, one floppy will hold a gedcom file containing quite a few thousand people. Good luck Carol www.genealogyprinters(.)com

Hi again Thanks both for your help. No idea how he managed it in the end but a text message on Sunday tells me the burn was successful and my discs are in the post (registered...so they don't get lost!) Lou
