I dont know 100% but from what I have read they all seemed to be older ones that were able to work,,,or needed little schooling, but it depends on what years you are talking about??? Sometimes they were sent from overcrowded families with parents consent,, Kay.

There are some ('a' ?) specialist websites on the subject of the children who were 'exported'. They major on allowing them a chance to trace their birth families - and share experiences with others in the same situation. In the process they may have something useful for you. I found them/it by googling. Christine

Try this site: http://www.childmigrants(.)com/canada.htm The stories on it are not very pleasant. It would seem that toddlers to children aged 15 were sent away.

My father's uncle was shipped out to Canada and I was able to trace his details and the ship he travelled on through the web. I then wrote to Barnardos who sent me the information they had on him which included a photograph and reports on his progress in Canada plus lots of information on his birth family. He fought in WWI, I have been able to get his army papers and copies of the medals he was awarded. Quite recently a relation died and in his effects were letters that this young man had written from Canada to his brother who stayed in England. The reason for him going to Canada was that his mother died and his father could not look after all the family. Good Luck Irene
