I am looking for Samuel Lockett in 1871 census. I have him in 1861 born abt1849 Middleton Lancashire. He married Elizabeth Holt in Durham 1872. Elizabeth Holt born abt 1854 Oldham, 1861 census living in Durham. 1871 census I think she is living as sister-in-law in Manchester. At time of marriage (1872) both were living in same house in Durham Thanks if you can help Gloria x |

Maybe? Eliz. Lochet abt 1854 Lancashire, England Wife Kenton Northumberland Samual Lochet abt 1849 Lancashire, England Head Kenton Northumberland Looks more like Locket. Address looks like Slatyford. Given her age, they may have lied about being married. |

Tracy, You were right it would appear to be them. In the 1881 census they have a son born 1872, the year they got married, so she was possibly pregnant when living in Slatyford and therefore lied about being married. Whats new!!! Thanks again for your help, I had spent ages trying to find them. I must learn to think of different spellings. Gloria |

Wild cards are great. You have to have 3 letters at the beginning, but I use them all the time - especially with my Chappells who often swap between one P, one L etc. I search for Chap*l now :) |

Yeah, I use Ancestry. Use a * for more than one letter or ? for just one letter. You can use the wild cards in any names or places, but you must have 3 letters at the beginning, or it won't work. For your guy, I typed Sam* in the first name and Loc*t in the surname. I also have Lanc* in the Keywords. Oh, yeah. I always use Exact Match as well. The other one doesn't do anything for me. |

Soundex ought to pick up Chap(p)el(l) and Chapple, plus a number of other names that sound a bit similar. But I have found some things escape when I haven't always been able to work out why! Christine |
