Anyone who does cryptic crosswords would find the Roman numerals useful. After I, V and X (as above) there are: L = 50 C = 100 (think of Cents in a Euro/Dollar - a 100 of them) D = 500 M = 1,000 (think of MB in computer-speak!) (Incidentally, I gather that V and L were intended to represent half the letter above: a V is the top half of an X chopped horizontally, and an L is the bottom half of a C - if it's written in a very square sort of way). If you get a smaller value letter immediately before a larger one then you deduct the small one from the larger one: e.g. 9 = VIIII = IX The biggest problem for Roman numerical work was the lack of a zero. That was invented by the Arabs and was a serious trade-secret for years! Christine

Sadly, Mb in computer speak is MEGAbytes (= 1,000,000 or strictly 1,048,576).

Geoff Yes - I'd forgotten that. It's not my area of expertise - I should have checked first! K - Kilo - somehow got into the 1,000 slot, didn't it, like Kilometres. So it's more useful to think of Millimetres / Millilitres and such - which are fractions - a thousandth (in the same way that Cents are hundredths) . Christine
