HI – Whereas at one time I could download attachments and read them, now it seems that something may have been changed inadvertently because the attachments are in code when opened or in an unrecognised format. How do I get back to square one? I am not sure if I have made myself clear, but I am not very good at description. Desperate for help. Rita

Rita Have loaded any software onto your system since you were able to read your attachments. What operating system are you running. Victor

Victor - I will have to check later with the putative head of the household as I'm not sure what operating system means. Is that XP 'cos that is what I've got. A family Tree 2003 programme was loaded. I can't think of anything else but he might. Whether this was before or after the problem arose I am not sure. I will get back to you. 'bye now. Rita

Rita (nearly) every file has an extension ( *bmp etc) which indicates what sort of program should open it. You can change which program opens it. In XP you can do this in my computer/tools/folder options/file types. More than one program can usually open any file so you need to tell the computer your preference. Bob

Rita Firstly what type of files are you trying to open, do you know. It will tell you when you click on attachment icon. As you have Windows XP as your system you will be able to do 'Systems Restore'. Go into Help. This will have a heading Systems Restore. When you click on this it will give you the ability to restore the computer systems to a previous date. When on the page that list's the restore points the ones in Bold are the ones you can restore to. Click on the date you want and then carry on from there. The restore facility will sestore your operating system back to what it was on the date you selected. If something has corrupted your system this will sort it out. Be warned, if you restore the system to, prior to the loading of any software, then the software will not work, it will need to be re-loaded. Hope you understand this. Victor

Hi Robert - Thanks for explanation - I think that even I can understand that; the only bugbear is that my PCs never give me the required response so that always leaves me with a dilemma - proceed in ignorance and hope for the best or quit while I am ahead. Rita
