I have just found an adrress from the Electoral Roll for my mum's cousin who we hope holds the information we need on my nana to further our tree. I am wondering am I allowed to use the address from the Electoral Roll without his permission or is it illegal. Thanks Michelle

I don't think it can be illegal if the electoral roll is available to the public. I have used names and addresses of people with my maiden surname that I've got from the electoral roll to send out letters, just in case they happened to be related to my grandfather, whose death I am trying to trace. I had letters or phone calls from about half of the people and everyone was pleasant and no one complained about me writing. (I included s.a.e.'s and my phone number and email address). Just remember to be polite and apologise for taking up his time, but say that you really need his help and are not looking to cause any upset. I don't think most people would mind. Good Luck, Kath. x

Michelle I have just compiled an address list from the electoral roll for one line of my family as I think we are all related and I am just about to write to them. As it's in the public realm I can't see a problem with it. Kath - how many letters did you send? I have about 20 across Northumberland, Durham and Cleveland but I know for a fact that some of them are siblings Thanks Andrea

Andrea, I sent out about 8 to all the male names on the Isle of Wight, because I had been told my grandfather could possibly have gone there. I didn't bother with females as I thought they may have married into the family. I think I got two letters and three phone calls, but three of the men were a father and two grown up sons, so could have saved a couple of letters, but I didn't know that at the time. None turned out to have a connection that we know of at the moment but were all happy to talk to me. I have also written letters to people at addresses for other branches of my tree. Some have replied and some have not, but no one has objected. Whereabouts in Cleveland are you interested in? I live in Cleveland. Kath. x
