Hi, in 1881 i have a David Elliott, as son, Ann Elliott as Wife, Thomas Elliott as Head, Margaret Thompson as Daughter and Edward John Thompson as grandson. Nothing unusual there, except in 1891, i have David Elliott as head, Ann Elliott as mother and then Thomas Grey as nephew. No mention of margaret and Edwards name has changed. Any ideas would be greatful, living in Byker Newcastle at both times.

Depending on age the Thompsons could be a married daughter and husband visiting or living with them, hence not there next census

I understand that margaret and her son Edward could have possibly been visiting, but why would Edwards name have changed in the 10 years? i presume maybe margarets first husband died and she remarried and Edward took the new husbands name? sorry updated message above because i left out the grandson bit

Am I missing something? Why cannot the nephew be the child of another sister, who had left home, and married, by 1881? It's not merely the surname, but the Christian name as well, that appears to be entirely different.

I have the rest of the family and there was only one sister, margaret so Edward Grey isnt from another sister. i just find it odd that Edwards name would have changed to add another twist i believe i have found margaret thompson happily married and living with her husband and other children. Maybe im just reading this all wrong, and it doesnt make sense because its not meant to

Do you mean Edward Grey as nephew and not Thomas Grey. I presume you do, as there is no Thomas Grey living with David and Ann. He would be David and Ann's nephew as if it is the Edward Thompson in 1881, he was Thomas Elliot's grandson and Thomas is obviously the father of David and Margaret. It is possible Margaret has remarried to a Grey and therefor her son has taken the Grey name, which makes sense. regards, Siobhan

or it could be that whoever Edward mother was, remarried and so Edward took on his new father name. It happened alot believe me.
