Could anyone please help In 1943 my ggrandfather was visited by 2 men in suits(that's how my grandmother would start the story. They showed my ggrandfather some documents, he couldnt read or write so he told them to clear off. In 1951 when he died my ggreat grandmother also got a visit, she said she didnt want their chairty and again told who ever they were to clear off, my grandmother who was then in her forties can remember them saying what ever is was would be held in chancery. Can anyone tell me what this means. Thanks Karen.

It sounds as if your great great grandfather was the legitimate heir to an estate. There should be records regarding this. The snag is that they are not particularly easy to trace, and may be in unepected names. I grew up with a story of money lost in Chancery. By an amazing stroke of luck, I bumped into a man researching the same family who turned out to be a cousin whose family had WON the case. (Which was how he could afford a round the world trip, researching his family history, while I had snatched a few days b & b to visit the record office.) He gave me the reference, and the names meant absolutely nothing to me. The court case was in the 1880s, the relationship went back to a mutual ancestor born in the 1730s, and the case was between the executors and his ancestor. I would never have found this by myself. So I hope you have lots of luck on this!

Hi Brenda. I have been able to trace my gg grandfather back to 1820 he is a gas fitter, living in Preston. However he was born in Walton Le Dale. I suppose its a trip to Walton. i never ever heard of it! Karen.
