Hi! After managing to track down my family right back to the 1861 census, i understand that it is then necessary to use parish records and such to trace back further. I have absolutly nooooo idea of how to begin doing this and would greatly appreciate any tips on how to get started!! Thankyou xxxxxxx

Hi Frances Parish registers are usually held at the records office for the area you are researching in, which is great if you live nearby. If you don't, there are a couple of other things you could try. The Family History Society for the area may have transcribed some of the parish registers which you can purchase from them - usually on cd or floppy. Or the actual records office may be prepared to do look ups for you. It comes at a price though and it varies from one records office to another. I think ours charge about £12 per half hour of research. The cheapest option would be to find a kind fellow member who is going to the records office and is prepared to do a look up for you. Good Luck Jeanette x

If you live near an LDS Family History Centre (there is a list of centres on their website at www.familysearch.org) you can order parish records for a few pounds and the centre will keep them for about a month for you to look through. Kath. x

You can look at records on the familysearch site to give you a background for your research.(IGI) These are taken from parish registers and church member's submissions.... the latter can be very 'off mark' and all the records should be checked against actual records. The same church has done a wonderful job of filming the actual parish records and these can be viewed at the family history centres of the Mormon church. You have to order 'out of area' films for a small fee. These films are also usually available at the record office nearest to the event.

Frances, if you are back to 1861 - have you checked out any births, marriages and deaths from1837 when registration began ? Some of them on the 1861 census you have must have done one of those things in that time period, in which case you can buy the certificate for £7 from the GRO online site (having found the ref first - try freebmd first, if they arent on there you will have to search 1837online pay to view). This will give you more info re parents, occupations and addresses.
