Ask if anyone has the Surname Atlas. This shows the distribution of surnames (and Christian names) in 1881. Ancestry has a similar tool, but much more primitive. You can refine searches right down, to pinpoint the Poor Law Unions where there are most references to the surname. Despite the coming of the railways and the pull of the cities, it is still a good guide to the geographical origin of surnames. For meanings, you really need to know what part of the country they come from, as the same word may have different meanings in different areas. |
