I am looking for Thomas Hughes on the 1881 census but have as yet been unable to find him. When I have revisited the 1891 census he has a daughter Annie aged 12 & son William aged 10 both born in Ireland. I am guessing that the family were living in Ireland, can someone please advise me how I could check because until now all my rellies have been in england. He was born in approx 1852 in Little Chart, Kent. Any suggestions greatfully recieved. Thanks Dawn.

Dawn I don't know. I do know that the only surviving Irish censuses are 1901 and 1911. Do you know what Thomas did for a living? If he was a soldier you could check where his regiment was in 1881. Any idea where in Ireland Annie and her brother were born? nell

Hi Nell, on the 1891 & 1901 census Thomas lived in York & worked as a cab driver/groom. I don't know where in Ireland they were born as again I just got the info from the 1891/1901 census. Thanks for the reply. Dawn

Is it possible that Thomas worked for a family who moved to Ireland? Most people moved for employment reasons. Then you have to ask why he moved back again!!! nell

Where is Thomas & family in 1891, and have you found him and the children in 1901 - perhaps that might give a clearer indication of where in Ireland they were born. nell

In 1861 & 1871 Thomas was living in Kent with his parents Robert & Catherine. He married Mary Ann Peel in 1875 in York, where they had their first son in 1877. Two years later they had a daughter in Ireland, followed by a son in 1881. They then had a daughter in 1885 who was born in Eccleshill, Yorkshire and moved back to York in time for my G Grandad being born in 1890. Does anyone know what records (if any) might exist to prove them living in Ireland during the time of the 1881 census? Many thanks Dawn

There are 6 William Hughes's born in Antrim and Down between 1879 and 1882 according to ancestryireland(.)co(.)uk. There are also several Annes, Anns and Annies, but only 2 born in the most likely years. For £10 per name you could see transcribed copies of the birth certs, but this is only really worth it if you can be sure that the family were likely to be in Down or Antrim.

I notice that William has a middle name (R - possibly Robert??) would that not help to track his birth registration down in the Irish GRO? You should be able to view or order one at your local LDS centre.
