Out of idle curiosity, I ran HAWKINS through Quick search, refining it with PORT as place of birth (to catch Portsmouth, Portsea and Landport in a single hit). I got zero matches, all six pages of them. I know that GR are 'improving' place of birth. Does anyone know whether they are 'improving' methods of searching as well?

I don't understand. Why would PORT bring up anything but PORT?

You have never had to put the whole word in to search for a birthplace. This can help mop up various misspellings and is particularly useful for Portsmouth/Portsea/Landport. Try it and see.

I've just queried this little problem with support. I got a reply! I was told that if I used Quick search I had to enter First name and last name. 1. I was querying the strange way results are presented if you refine a search by entering place of birth. 2. You only have to enter last name on quick search. Am I on a different planet to support? Or do they not have the least idea of how GR works?

Yes, Brenda - that's the difference between paid staff and paying members....... Go into any office in the land and you will find a few staff who are interested in what they are doing and use their brains to do their job, but many are only there to do the absolute minimum and collect their wage........ Now, if you are paying out money rather that collecting it, you are much more likely to want to find out how the thing you have paid for works!! lol - Maybe they could give you a job? Sarah
