abandoned babies

i have an ancestor who as a baby was left tied to a chair on a bank of a river, we believe he was illegitiate, he was brought by someone and given a name how do we go about tracing his parents or is it an impossible task

I would imagine that it would usually be impossible to trace these parents, unless the case was reported in the newspaper and alledged parents were named. Someone once told me that her great grandfather was found abandoned and his given surname was the name of the street, where he was found. As this was unusual, it has made subsequent relatives easier to trace, by surname.

I have an ancestor who's baptism entry records (approx): 'This child is believed to have been born in the parish about three years ago. Mother's present residence unknown' - but they did know the mother's name, apparently. I am assuming that I shall only find out any more by the purest fluke/accident. Christine
